To prevent the formation of carious lesions, caries prevention is always necessary. The first thing you can do for your dental health is, of course, to take good care of your teeth at home. But this is not enough and every person also needs professional prevention, which can be provided by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Professional dental prevention can involve a number of manipulations:

  1. Annual professional oral hygiene. During this visit, tartar and plaque will be removed, a fluoride gel will be applied to the teeth and the teeth will be assessed for decay.
Application of silants on the lateral teeth.
  2. A silant is an initially liquid material that is placed in a thin layer into the sockets of the teeth. After polymerisation with a lamp, the silant hardens. As the natural tooth sockets become shallower thanks to the silant, they are easier to clean and less plaque builds up, which makes it more difficult for microbes to enter and lowers the risk of cavities. In addition, silants can be applied to newly carious lesions (it must be assessed on an individual basis whether this is possible or whether the caries should already be drilled out).
  3. Coating the teeth with fluoride varnish. The varnish is applied to both permanent and deciduous teeth. Fluor varnish is mainly used for the prevention and treatment of dental caries. Fluoride varnish also strengthens tooth enamel, so it is often used for enamel dysplasia – when the enamel is rough and white, indicating that it is weak.
  4. Coating teeth with tefenfluoride. Tefenfluoride is used for caries prevention, before orthodontic treatment and to prevent tooth sensitivity. Tefenfluoride works very well if the application is renewed annually.
