When filling a tooth after caries removal, a strict protocol must be followed. The tooth must be isolated from saliva and blood. Next, the tooth is treated with a special acid and a bandage, which in plain language can be called an adhesive, is applied. It binds the tooth to the material to be filled. Next, the tooth is constructed with the filling material, which mimics both the colour and the physical characteristics of the tooth. The process also uses a polymerisation lamp to make the composite material hard and durable.

In our clinic, we not only perform fillings after caries or root canal treatment, but also aesthetic fillings. This is the covering of tooth tissue with a filling for cosmetic purposes. Such a filling may be necessary if the tooth is discoloured or if the patient does not like not only the colour but also the shape of the tooth.

However, not all cases can be filled. Usually, a tooth is restored with a filling if at least 50% of the tooth tissue remains. If there is less, there is a high risk of fracture and the tooth can be saved with lab-made fillings – these are onlays. These fillings are made by a dental technician from composite or ceramic and are very durable.

If the tooth has lost a lot of tissue, it can be restored with a dental crown, which is also made in a laboratory.

In our office, we will prepare the tooth, take an impression of it and, after a few days, fix the crown or onlay with cement.
