The most common dental procedure is tooth filling. The first step is to anaesthetise the patient to make the treatment process as comfortable and painless as possible. Next, the entire caries, or hole, in the tooth is drilled out. The dentist then prepares the tooth for the filling by applying insulating rubber to ensure a dry environment, shaping strips, etching and placing a band to ensure that the filling material adheres to the tooth. The filling material is placed in small layers and hardened with a lamp. The final step is to examine the tooth in the bite and polish it.
